Sierra Nevada begins preparations for the new ski season

The Sierra Nevada Businessmen Association will hold a meeting this week with Cetursa, the public company that manages the Andalusian winter resort, in order to outline preparations for the new season, such as the protocols for the use of ski lifts with safety conditions derived from the coronavirus pandemic, and does not contemplate "another possibility" to open.

This was pointed out this Monday by the president of the Sierra Nevada Business Association, Enrique de la Higuera, who has assured that the non-opening of the winter season "would be the ruin of the sector."

As reported last week by Cetursa, Sierra Nevada, which during the summer has combined the summer exploitation with the work for the opening of the winter, is preparing the advance sales campaign of ski passes for the 2020-21 winter season.

De la Higuera explained that the Granada resort will adapt the protocols based on the models of the Austrian resorts, with glaciers, and of the Alps that open this next fortnight with the use of mechanical means already adapted to the regulations stipulated by the authorities. health services against Covid-19.

Having these protocols ready will be one of the keys to opening the Sierra Nevada in winter after what has been considered one of the best summers of the Andalusian season.

The president of the businessmen has recognized that the "opening scenario" that he contemplates depends on two factors. On the one hand, like every year, they will have to be aware of the weather and snowfall.

On the other hand, the evolution of the pandemic will be the decisive determining factor. If it remains within "reasonably manageable limits", the opening could be considered at the end of November, with between 20 and 30 percent of the total hotel plant , Enrique de la Higuera pointed out.

An "agile system" will be necessary, allowing room for maneuver "depending on the volume" of business, on the basis that "all this is new", and there will be companies such as the ski school sector that will have to " adapt "the workforce according to customer demand and, in turn, the evolution of the pandemic.

The business community, which in Sierra Nevada depends above all on national tourism, mainly from Madrid or the Levant, lives this situation "with great fear" and "much uncertainty". There have been cancellations of groups of schools, whose families "do not trust", but also reservations that are maintained and "have not been canceled", so that a start to the season could be considered, if circumstances allow it and not it restricts mobility between communities or provinces, "more or less reasonable", with prospects that may not be "bad".
