The Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000 ski resort, in the French Cerdagne region, is gearing up for the 2026-2027 season with its major investment in ski lifts this year. The centerpiece is the Carlit Express, a six-seat detachable chairlift that cost 9 million euros and replaces the old four-seat chairlift at Calme Nord.

The new features don’t stop at the lift. The resort is adding an electric snowmobile area for children, the town’s most iconic hotel is doubling its number of rooms, and there will be night skiing sessions to extend the day. All with an eye toward the opening, set for December 4, 2026.

Carlit Express: Here’s a Look at Font-Romeu’s New Chairlift

Altiservice, the company that manages the ski area, has commissioned manufacturer Leitner to install the lift. The new chairlift stays at 5 metres per second and cuts the ascent time in half compared to the old Calme Nord: the nearly 1,200-meter journey is now covered in about four minutes. In addition, it requires only nine towers, four fewer than its predecessor.

Sustainability was also a key consideration in the project. The chairlift features a DirectDrive motor, with which the resort expects to reduce electricity consumption by about 12%.

Elevation: departure at 1,939 m and arrival at 2,213 m, with a vertical rise of 274 m.
Length: 1,199 m.
Capacity: 2,000 people per hour.

Scheduled opening: December 2026.

What’s changing on the Calme Nord slopes

The Carlit Express serves the Pradeilles and Paul Ribeill runs in the Calme Nord ski area, one of the areas farthest from the main hub of the ski area. With this change, getting back up the mountain after each run will be much faster and more comfortable—a welcome change on cold days.

The lift also operates outside the ski season. When it runs in the summer, it reconnects via cable to the mountain trails leading to Lake Pradeilles and the Les Bouillouses area, one of the region’s major summer attractions.

More things to do in Font-Romeu for families and after skiing

The little ones can try out a new activity in the Les Airelles area: electric snowmobiles for children under 12, in ten-minute sessions with a listed price of 16.50 euros. It’s a great option for families travelling with children who can’t yet handle a full day on the slopes.

In town, the Grand Hôtel l’Ermitage, a four-star hotel in Accor’s Handwritten collection, has expanded its capacity from 22 to 44 rooms. And for those who want to keep skiing after dark, the resort will offer free night skiing on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays to holders of a six-day lift ticket valid during Christmas week.

Font-Romeu also continues its “Mission Safety” educational program, designed to promote responsible behavior on the slopes and better coexistence among skiers.

Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000: A sunny resort with slopes for everyone

Located just a stone’s throw from the Spanish border, Font-Romeu is one of the sunniest spots in France. Its ski area features 58 km of slopes and 24 lifts at altitudes ranging from 1,717 to 2,213 metres, with plenty of easy terrain for beginners and more challenging runs for experienced skiers. Other resorts in the French Pyrenees, such as Les Angles and Cambre d’Aze, are just a few kilometres away—ideal for combining into a single holiday.

When does Font-Romeu open for the 2026-2027 season?

The resort is scheduled to open on December 4, 2026, and close on March 29, 2027, snow and weather permitting. You can stay updated on any changes to Font-Romeu’s opening and closing dates, as well as the trail conditions.

The opening coincides with the hotel deals for travelling in December in Font-Romeu—the first chance to try out the Carlit Express—and comes a few weeks before the Christmas holidays. If you want to secure accommodation and a ski pass during the busiest dates, it’s best to book in advance.
