Tignes closed its summer ski season on the Grande Motte glacier this Wednesday, 15 July, a few days earlier than planned. The Savoie resort was the last place in France where summer skiing was still possible, after Val d'Isère closed its slopes weeks earlier and Les 2 Alpes did the same on 5 July.

The closure follows several consecutive nights without frost, which prevented the ski surface from regenerating and exposed rocks and bare ice patches. According to the resort itself, the glacier currently holds only 20 centimetres of snow, compared to a metre on 20 June. Tignes was due to close this Sunday, 19 July, in any case, so the closure was brought forward by only a few days.

A change of management and a difficult first summer season

Management of the resort and its glacier passed on 1 May from Compagnie des Alpes to Altta (Alliance Locale pour la Transition des Territoires d'Altitude), a public consortium led by Tignes town council that also runs the nearby resort of Sainte Foy Tarentaise. This first summer ski season under the new management has not been easy: between 20 June and 13 July, 7,856 lift passes were sold, a figure that leaves the lift operation running at a loss amid increasingly scarce snow.

Does summer skiing have a future in the Alps?

Altta's president, Clément Colin, explained in comments reported by AFP that the glacier loses between 3 and 4 metres of thickness each year, and that morning temperatures hover around 5°C at 3,456 metres with no overnight frost, suggesting the glacier could disappear within 10 to 15 years. Despite this, Altta has committed to keeping summer skiing going for as long as possible, and is already working on an alternative activity offer for spring and autumn. Tignes' deputy mayor, Olivier Duch, is more optimistic about the winter season, which, according to the studies consulted, could continue for another 50 years, from late December to mid-April.

What is happening in Tignes is part of a wider decline in glacier summer skiing across the Alps: a 2023 study by Bruno Abegg and Marius Mayer, published in Frontiers in Human Dynamics, shows that the share of days glacier resorts stayed open between May and October fell from 27% to 14.8% between 2011 and 2022, with an 88.6% drop in August compared with 2011. For those already planning their next trip, the real focus stays on the winter season, where Tignes remains as appealing as ever.
