Saas Fee opens its summer ski season after renewing its Metro Alpin

On June 28, Saas Fee premiered the renovation of its Metro Alpin. Inaugurated on December 19, 1984, it allows travel from the Felskinn station at an altitude of 2,980 m to the Mittelallalin station at 3,456 m above sea level. Construction of this subway alpine funicular began on September 1, 1981 and represented a pioneering achievement in ropeway technology at the time.

From the very beginning its task was always to transport skiers, and later also snowboarders in both winter and summer. It also provides access to the highest revolving restaurant in the world. The Saas Fee Metro Alpin has a tunnel length of 1,447 meters and a vertical drop of 476 meters.

Forty years it has been able to transport hundreds of thousands of skiers, but it was time for a renovation to bring it up to today's standards of comfort and technology. The new cars have a capacity for 95 people each, and take about 4.5 minutes to go on holiday. In addition, the design now allows for much faster access and exit, shortening waiting times for the Alpìn Metro at each terminal.

The renovation of the Saas Fee Alpine Subway has been very complex, as it was necessary to take advantage of the two short months between the end of the winter ski season and the restart of the summer activities. In addition, transporting the carriages up to an altitude of almost 3,000 meters, where the departure terminal is located, entailed a complicated logistical coordination that included adapting the cable car to be able to carry the train hanging from the cable.

The inauguration of the renovation of the Saas Fee Metro Alpin was important for the start of the summer ski season, as well as the hiking activities that are starting now.

Although the managers of Saastal Bergbahnen have not announced anywhere that they are starting tomorrow, when they finished the winter ski season, it was reported that the ski slopes would be ready for skiing again this Monday, July 8.

Now it will not close until next May, as long as the weather conditions do not force otherwise. Therefore, it could be said that this is the first winter resort to open the 2024-2025 ski season.

Initially it will open from 7.00 am to 12.00 noon every day, then from August 26 it will remain will extend its closing time to 13h, but it will start half an hour later, at 07.30 am. At the end of September, it will change to 8:00 am to 2:00 pm as temperatures drop, then in October it will move closer to its winter schedule with operations from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Spain is among the top 10 countries that receive the most tourists to Saas Fee in summer, with about 2,500. In winter the figure drops to 1,200 skiers.
