The Comú de la Massana confirms that the project to connect the Pal and Arinsal ski areas—known as Vallnord Pal-Arinsal—is moving forward steadily. The water resource studies commissioned to assess the feasibility of the connection have yielded favorable results, and the case is now being forwarded to Andorra’s Ministry of the Environment, which will decide whether to grant final authorization for the project.

The improved data comes after several meteorological instructoring stations were installed in the Pal ski area to accurately measure snow and water availability in the area. According to the Comú, the results obtained are notably positive, which has allowed for the expansion of the hydrological studies now being submitted to the ministry for its final assessment.

How much would the connection between Pal and Arinsal add up to?

The on-piste connection between the two ski areas is not a new idea: it was included in the terms of the partnership agreement and was one of the conditions that made the current joint venture managing the Andorran resort possible. If it were to become a reality, it would allow skiers to connect Pal and Arinsal on the slopes, without relying on the cable car that currently links the two valleys, and would add 7 kilometres of skiable terrain, bringing Pal Arinsal’s total to 70 kilometres of slopes.

The first step has already been taken: the Port Negre chairlift

Although the full connection is still awaiting the green light, part of the improvement plan is already a reality. The resort officially inaugurated the TSD6 Port Negre detachable six-seat chairlift in the Arinsal ski area, a facility that replaced an old four-seat chairlift and represented an investment of 8 million euros. The new facility significantly improved access in that area, bringing skiers closer to the cable car that connects to Pal, and led to the opening of a brand-new blue run, El Niu, which is 700 metres long.

Reasons for the delay: water for snowmaking

The project to fully connect the two areas had even been given a target date, with the 2024-2025 season set as the deadline by the resort’s then-general manager, Josep Marticella, who attributed the postponement to building permits still pending and the lack of guarantees regarding the timely arrival of the necessary equipment s, which led to the project being divided into two phases.

Shortly thereafter, a more significant obstacle was identified: the lack of sufficient water resources to produce snow in the area of the future connection. Assessments at the time made it necessary to seek water from underground sources, with availability that reports at the time described as “very limited.” It is precisely this data that the Comú de la Massana has now been able to corroborate thanks to the new weather stations installed in Pal, whose results are fueling the optimism with which this new phase of the project is being approached.

While the Ministry of the Environment reaches a decision, Pal Arinsal remains one of the leading ski resorts in the Pyrenees thanks to its family-friendly atmosphere and variety of slopes.
