Cerler Opens New Gondola from Benasque: Tickets Will Cost 3.75 Euros

Last week, the Benasque City Council declared the cable car connecting the town to the Cerler ski resort to be an urban public cable transportation service—a key step toward opening it in time for the upcoming ski season. During the same session, the fare structure was also approved, with a one-way ticket starting at 3.75 euros.

After a failed first attempt last July, the Benasque-Cerler cable car is now certain to open in December 2026, coinciding with the start of the ski season. This was confirmed by the mayor of Benasque, Manuel Mora, in an interview on the program *La Terraza* on Cadena Ser Aragón Oriental Radio.

The project reached its definitive turning point on Monday, August 17, when the full council approved its designation as a public cable transport service. The measure, backed by the ruling of a commission of experts and political representatives, establishes the legal and financial framework necessary to operate this key infrastructure for mobility in the Benasque Valley.

In his conversation with Cadena Ser, the mayor gave a highly favorable assessment of both the pace of construction work and the project’s financial performance. As he noted, the technical construction of the cable car from Benasque to Celer has been completed

“effectively, decisively, and in an exemplary manner. There have been no deviations from the budget, and all environmental requirements have been strictly adhered to. This is a success story in how Next Generation funds are being utilized, in this case in Benasque.

Why was the July opening delayed?

The cable car is fully completed, but its commercial opening did not take place last July, as originally planned. The call for regional elections in Aragon left the regional government in a caretaker capacity, which prevented the timely processing of a grant of approximately two million euros earmarked for the project. Without that funding secured, it was not possible to launch the service, and the City Council had to postpone the opening until the financial framework was finalized.

Now that the election situation has been resolved and the regional grant has been awarded, the City Council has rescheduled the timeline to coincide with the start of the 2026-2027 ski season.

Two years of municipal operation before putting the concession out to bid

Ownership of the gondola will remain strictly municipal. During the first two years of operation, the City Council will award a service contract to a specialized company for day-to-day operations, but the municipal government itself will assume the financial risk of the activity.

The goal of this initial period is to gather real-world data on demand, passenger volume, and user demographics—information that is currently not available. After 24 months, the City Council will put a long-term service concession out to bid, with financial terms adjusted to the actual traffic figures recorded.

Proposed Fares for the First Year

For this first year of operation, the fares proposed at the plenary session are as follows (adult / child up to 12 years old and senior over 65):

Single-ride ticket: 3.75 € / 1.88 €
Daily pass: 7.50 € / 3.75 €
3-day pass: 15.00 € / 7.50 €
Monthly pass: 37.50 € / 18.75 €
Season Pass (Winter or Summer): 75.00 € / 37.50 €
Annual pass: 131.50 € / 65.75 €
Children under 3 and school-age children: free

The mayor is confident that the gondola will elevate Benasque, Cerler, and Anciles to a higher level of competitiveness in tourism and mobility, offering a fast and clean transportation alternative that reduces private vehicle traffic on the climb to the resort.
