Verbier has opened its earliest ski season this Saturday

40 centimetres have been enough to inaugurate the ski season in Verbier .

For the moment in a very limited terrain, but the Swiss resort managers hope that the drop in temperatures expected for next week, as well as some extra snowfall, will help them to maintain the conditions, and even with a little luck to open some more slopes.

It must be taken into account that opening at the beginning of November requires a good study of the weather by the mountain staff.

A 40 cm snowfall is good, but does not guarantee a good base for the rest of the season. Early snow usually falls on warm ground, causing it to melt from below even as temperatures drop.

Without consistent later snowfall, such an early opening can quickly become a mere token: a few groomed runs with a handful of lifts, more focused on maintaining the image of an early-starting hotel offer than on delivering an authentic ski experience.

Even though that's Switzerland and it's in the middle of the Alps, it's too early on November 1 to be able to open slopes if they're not on a glacier. But Verbier received at the end of this week a snowfall that once compacted by the machines has given them those 40 cm that have made more than one skier happy.

Especially because the early risers have been welcomed with a warm coffee and a croissant.

This Saturday, the Lac des Vaux ski area has been opened for the moment, while the Attelas-Ruinettes ski area will be launched this Sunday after weather conditions have prevented it for the time being.

From now on, the ski resort ofVerbierwill be open only on weekends in November with a 20% discount on the ski pass (74CHF for adults or 79 euros). And from Monday, December 1st onwards, it will be uninterrupted.

Verbier is based at an altitude of 1,500 metres in the Swiss valley of Bagnes, with ski slopes reaching an altitude of 3,330 at Mont Fort.

Integrated in the network of Les 4 Valleys, it connects with Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, La Tzoumaz and Brusson along some 410 kilometres of slopes, accessible thanks to more than 80 lifts.

A poster on social networks informed of the opening of Verbier for this Saturday, November 1st.
