The famous Swiss ski resort, Saas Fee, has kicked off its 2023 summer season on the glacier with an amazing snow base of up to 250 centimeters. The most exciting thing this year is that, for the first time, the slopes are open for everyone, not just for competition teams or campuses.
Last summer, due to poor snow conditions, Saas Fee opted to keep the summer ski area on the glacier closed, allowing only competition teams access. However, thanks to exceptionally warm weather conditions and a cooler spring in 2023, the glacier is in a much better condition than last year.
The resort is optimistic that it will remain open until next spring.
The Saas Fee summer ski area is impressive, with up to 20 km of slopes, and is especially popular with freestylers and snowboarders, being one of the largest summer ski resorts in the Alps. On its first day of opening, 13.8 km of slopes have been cleared for this exciting mountain experience, with a solid snow base of up to 250 cm. The lifts start operating early in the morning, from 6:25 a.m. onwards.
Remarkable news for ski lovers is that Saas Fee has no plans to close for the entire winter season and will continue to welcome skiers until spring 2024, conditions permitting. This makes it one of the longest ski seasons in the world, offering eight months to enjoy the snow at its best.
Crowds of skiers from all over Europe are expected to visit the resort this summer.
While some argue that Saas Fee is the first to open for the new season each year, it is important to mention that Hintertux and Zermatt also make efforts to never close year-round. In addition to Saas Fee, other ski resorts such as Passo Stelvio in Italy and Tignes in France are also currently open, but are expected to close before the end of the year (before the end of the month in the case of Tignes).
