The Swiss Saas-Fee glacier—the only one still open for skiing in the middle of summer following Zermatt’s closure exactly one week ago—has announced that it is suspending operations on the slopes until further notice. The resort has thus confirmed its permanent closure this Sunday, August 9, after just 15 days of the summer ski season on its Mittelallalin glacier.

Only 15 days of open slopes

The resort, which had opened its slopes on July 25, first notified the managers and coaches of the national teams training on the glacier that it would close on Monday, August 10, until further notice. In response to questions about whether the lifts would be operating that day, the resort later clarified that it would remain open until noon on Sunday, August 9, at which point all activity will be suspended.

Despite the intensive preparation work carried out in recent weeks, current conditions no longer allow for the quality or safety of the slopes and facilities to be guaranteed. With the competition teams on their way to South America and the second half of August typically being the slowest period on the glacier, all signs point to the Saas-Fee lifts not resuming operations until September, well into meteorological fall.

Stelvio, the only resort still open in the Alps

With this closure, the Alps are left with virtually no summer skiing. A week ago, on July 31, Zermatt closed its slopes—also overnight—due to high temperatures, with the freezing point remaining several days above 5,000 metres in elevation. Earlier, in late July, the Austrian Hintertux Glacier had already brought forward the end of its summer season.

With Saas-Fee’s closure, only Stelvio, in Italy, remains as an Alpine resort with slopes for technical training, though it has not yet been able to open all of its lifts either. This scenario would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, when more than half a dozen glaciers in Europe remained operational throughout the summer.

Teams are heading to the Southern Hemisphere

Many of the national teams and clubs that have been training in Saas-Fee and Zermatt in recent days are already preparing to head to South America and New Zealand, where conditions are fully wintry. Argentina, with resorts like Cerro Castor in Ushuaia, and Chile, where record snow depths are being recorded this year, are thus becoming the go-to destinations for completing preseason training before the start of the World Cup.

The closure of the Alpine glaciers highlights, yet again, the growing difficulty of maintaining summer skiing in Europe due to rising temperatures. With their sights already set on the 2026-2027 season, Saas-Fee and the rest of the Swiss resorts are beginning to prepare for their return to winter, with the first ski holiday packages in the Swiss Alps now available for those who wish to book in advance.
