Last June 11, the President of the RFEDI, May Peus, confirmed that they will try again one more year to organize a World Cup event of Kilometer Launch in Formigal. A competition that has been jinxed in the Aragonese resort after three cancellations.

The one in 2020 because the date coincided with the closure of the country by the COVID. In 2023 it was tried again, but an avalanche affected the track. For 2024 it was the lack of conditions that prevented the race. Although the weekend of the competition it had already snowed a lot, a track of these characteristics needs a lot of previous work that lasts for several weeks.

And the fact is that in these Kilometer Launched slopes can reach 200 km / h with skis. In Formigal, FIS technicians and specialists in the discipline, such as the Spanish recordman Ricardo Adarraga (with 240.6 km/h), estimate that 230 km/h can be exceeded.

If the test can finally be held and that speed is certified, we would be facing the second fastest ski slope in the world, only behind the almost 260 km/h potential ofVars, and where in 2016 the last world record of the specialty was beaten when the Italian Simone Origone set 254.95 km/h.

The FIS has not yet published the calendar of the World Cup of the Launched Kilometer or Speed Skiing World Cup, which every year is shorter because of the continuous cancellations that have been recorded. In fact, last year only the one in Vars could be held, after the cancellation of Formigal and Grandvalira, the other two ski resorts that bet on this event.

A year earlier Idre Fjall in Sweden, a classic of the Kilometer Launched, had signed up, but also ended up canceling. 2023 also only Vars was able to organize its event. Formigal and Grandvalira also cancelled.

In 2020 it was going to be organized for the weekend of March 13-15. In 2023 it was scheduled for April 1 to 6, while for 2024 the day chosen was February 29.

The Kilometer Launched tracks have very strict characteristics that make it difficult to organize. Among them a good start ramp that allows to pick up speed quickly. Also a good slope and sufficient length for both the test itself and for braking. In general, only 4 ski resorts accept to organize this World Cup, although in some years, such as 2004, up to 8 resorts were included in the calendar.
