Cervino The One: The Most Expensive Ski Lift in the History of Skiing and Mountaineering Has Been Approved

The opening of the Alpine Crossing—which allows travellers to go from Switzerland to Italy by cable car across the Alps—has been a major boost for tourism in Zermatt. The holiday, now also open to pedestrians who do not wish to ski, takes travellers to Breuil-Cervinia.

But while on the Swiss side, a modern network of ski lifts—comprising the two 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride I and II (3S) cable cars —offers a seamless experience to reach Testa Grigia, the journey from that point to Italy is made via older, outdated lifts that require up to five transfers. As a result, few people from Breuil-Cervinia are willing to go on holiday to the glacier area, even as they watch the other side of the border fill with tourists in the summer.

So a year ago, they decided to “take the bull by the horns” and “take the plunge” by launching the Cervino The One project, with the goal of offering a travel experience similar to that on the Swiss side. The route will also be divided into two sections: Breuil-Cervinia-Plan Maison and Plan Maison-Plateau Rosa.

That means replacing no fewer than four chairlifts, tackling a steep ascent to reach the 3,479-meter peak of Testa Grigia, and installing a chairlift system that guarantees operation under virtually any weather conditions. And only a 3S system can offer this—a cable car consisting of three cables, two of which are fixed carrier cables (along which the cabins travel) and the third is the moving tractor cable that pulls them.

It was announced yesterday that the contract for this project has been awarded to the Italian lift manufacturer Leitner, which will collaborate with the companies Cogeis, Ivies, and BGF. The Cervino The One will replace the Breuil-Cervinia-Plan Maison gondola and then continue along the route of the old lift that led to Plateau Rosa. According to the company: “The journey will become an experience—an even more comfortable and faster ascent—that will save valuable time, allowing passengers to spend that time on thrilling descents instead.”

Along both sections (Breuil-Cervinia-Plan Maison and Plan Maison-Plateau Rosa), Symphony cabins will be installed, featuring 24 premium people, an interior ski rack, and non-slip rubber flooring designed by the Pininfarina studio.

According to the current schedule, the opening is planned for the 2029/2030 ski season.

The lower station of the 3S will be transformed into a welcoming area housing ticket offices, an information desk, rental services, and retail spaces. The heart of Cervino The One will be at Plan Maison, a central area that will also house a multipurpose hall, a workshop, and a storage area for the gondola operator/gondola shelter. Plateau Rosa will serve as the access point and connection to Switzerland and to the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II, which was also built by Leitner.

The two ski lifts will be of significant strategic importance from a tourism perspective, serving as an extraordinary international showcase. This is the result of a shared vision and a path forged over the years in collaboration with the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley."

For his part, Anton Seeber, president of Leitner, added that

“Building the Matterhorn The One is an extraordinary engineering challenge that we are tackling with great pride. This project, which redefines the standards of comfort, sustainability, and design for the entire Alpine Crossing, is concrete proof of how Leitner’s technology can serve the region to provide infrastructure that is safe, efficient, and perfectly integrated into a landscape that is unique in the world.

Following the lifts built on the Swiss side, the crowning achievement now comes with the construction—using the same three-cable technology—of the connection on the Italian side. The Alpine Crossing has brought to life a one-of-a-kind cross-border connection, all made possible by technology made in Italy.”

The new Cervino The One will cost 200 million euros, making it the most expensive ski lift in the history of skiing and mountaineering. It exceeds the 135 million that the Montebianco cost—also a 3S system that started at 105 million, then rose to 110, and some reports claim the final bill actually reached 145 million euros.
