Sierra Nevada will exceed for the first time in its history the 112 kilometers of marked slopes. The improvement of the slopes that has been carried out since last spring to be able to use the new Al Andalus gondola lift, as well as two new ski lifts oriented to training for competition, have allowed the creation of three new slopes of a little more than 1,000 meters in total.
The forecast is to start the winter ski season on November 25 as a preparation for the first big event of the ski season, perfect timing as it's Bank Holiday in Spain. By then it is expected to be able to open the Al Andalus gondola lift, and before Christmas the two ski lifts El Puente I and II.
The two lifts have the same name because they follow each other, so that when you finish one you can take the other. They are located in an existing ski area and within the current perimeter of the resort, which will now be oriented towards professional skiers or ski clubs that want to train with greater comfort and safety for other users, although it can also be used by other customers.
The aim is also to relieve pressure on the Monachil chairlift and, with it, the Loma de Dílar area, where Andalusian competition teams and tourist skiers currently mix, causing traffic problems and, ultimately, safety issues.
By moving the athletes to the El Puente area, a competition stadium will be created, suitable for high performance training and the holding of official events. The development of this new area will allow the creation of 3 new pistes and around 1,000 metres of additional ski runs, which will allow the Sierra Nevada to exceed 112 kilometres of skiable terrain for the first time.
This double ski lift and the construction of the new training and competition stadium cost 4.1 million euros, of which 2.5 million were paid by the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía (the rest, 1.6 million, was paid by Cetursa), which subsidised the project to support the clubs and the 3.3 thousand athletes of the Andalusian Winter Sports Federation (FADI).
