As is tradition in the French Pyrenees, March marks the beginning of the season closure for alpine ski resorts and this year 2022-2023 will be no different.
In a fortnight's time, on March 19, the resorts of Cambre d'Aze, part of the Trio Pyrénées group, and Luz Ardiden, part of the N'Py group, will be the first to end the ski season with snow and after experiencing an increase in attendance during the February holidays.
Ax 3 Domaines celebrated the end of February with a big party and fireworks.
N'Py recorded 799,244 ski days during the first three weeks of February at its Peyragudes, Piau, Grand Tourmalet, Pic du Midi, Luz-Ardiden, Cauterets, Gourette and La Pierre Saint Martin resorts, representing a 10% increase compared to the previous year which totaled 727,953 ski days. In addition, around 175,000 ski days are estimated to have been recorded in the last week of February and the first week of March.
L'Ariege also saw a large increase in ski resort attendance during the month of February. Ax 3 Domaines, for example, achieved its "Top 5 in the history of the resort" with more than 170,000 customers and an average of 6,500 skiers per day. This figure represents between 40 and 50% of Ax's annual turnover, which translates into revenues of between four and five million euros.
Although the weather has not been perfect for ski resorts in the Pyrenees during the February holidays, as snowfall has gradually increased, it has been very close to the ideal scenario. For this reason, some resorts have decided to extend their season until the end of April. The last resorts to close in the French Pyrenees will be Cauterets and the Pic du Midi, which will close on April 23.
This is what the slopes looked like in Piau during the end of February holidays.
