Tignes succeeds in opening its summer ski season today

Although a small opening was made yesterday Tuesday, from today, Wednesday June 3, the Grande Motte de Tignes glacier is again accessible for skiers and pedestrians in its usual schedule. The intention was to open on Saturday June 22, but heavy torrential rains flooded much of the facilities of Tignes - Val Claret, from where the cable car access to the piste area starts, forcing to postpone the opening.

Firefighting teams, resort staff and contracted companies have managed to drain the water from this ski area, restore the operation of the ski lifts and bring the facilities back into working order. The rains had a significant effect on this area, but further up the glacier, although not with such intensity, these precipitations left some snow.

In this way, Tignes has been able to open with the total of its ski slopes that total about 20 kilometers of slopes including the blue Rabotch, as well as five other red level traces. The competition stadium, reserved for club training and professional skiers, is also open.

To access the slopes, the Funicular starts at 6:45 a.m. and five minutes later the Grande Motte cable car. Once on the slopes, the Vanoise and Panoramique chairlifts, as well as the Termignon chairlift, start at 07:00 am. The cross-country ski trail is also open.

The current snow thickness is a maximum of 4 meters of hard snow , although the snowfall in recent days has not been enough to cover the Sahara sand that fell a few days ago and shows a brownish image in the areas not trodden by the machine.

The closing of the summer ski season in Tignes, for the moment, is still postponed until July 21. Although it depends on the conditions on the slopes that can bring forward the date or even if they were to be maintained, perhaps extend it a few more days.

The difference in the situation is very different in 2024 (bottom picture) than in 2023 (top picture).
