Les Deux Alpes, a ski resort for everyone

No matter your age, ski level, nor if you are more into skiing, snowboarding or telemark, skiing at Les 2 Alpes, there is guaranteed fun in the snow for everyone!

Today we will give you all the insights about Les 2 Alpes, one of the most popular ski resorts in the French Alps, located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and direct neighbour of the also popular ski resort of Alpe d'Huez. Contrary to what many believe, it doesn't get its name from being located between two mountains or valleys, but to the fact that it encompasses two towns: Vénosc and Mont-de-Lans.

In addition to being the second-oldest ski resort in France, after Chamonix-Montblanc, it is home to the Mont-de-Lans glacier, the largest skiable glacier in Europe. With an altitude ranging from 1,300 to 3,600 metres and more than 200 km of slopes for all levels, Les 2 Alpes is an ideal destination for advanced skiers, beginners and families alike.

The Ski Resort in Numbers

The resort of Les 2 Alpes is divided into seven ski areas, each with unique characteristics to suit different levels of skiers:

  • Glacier (3,200 - 3,600 m): this is the highest ski area of the resort, guaranteeing natural snow and 360° panoramic views. The slopes in this area are ideal for skiers of all levels. From the resort, it only takes 17 minutes to reach the summits thanks to the brand new Jandri 3S.

  • Toura - Snowpark (2,600 m): THE ideal place for freestylers wanting to improve their skills in the Snowpark! This ski area is perfect for snowboard and freestyle lovers, with modules adapted for all levels.

  • La Fée (2,100 m): A ski area that offers tranquillity and breathtaking scenery, ideal for those looking for a freeride experience in a natural environment. The 8-people "Pierre Grosse" gondola lift links the La Fée ski area with the glacier ski area.

  • Le Diable (2,400 m): With red and black runs, this ski area is perfect for advanced skiers looking for greater challenges.

  • Vallée Blanche (2,100 m): Offers sunny slopes and is ideal for intermediate skiers looking for gentler descents.

  • Les Crêtes (2,100 m): An ideal area for beginners and families, with wide and accessible green and blue runs. The ski area is very easy to access, thanks to the numerous lifts that go up from the resort: the village 1800 chairlift, Belle Etoile Telemix and le Diable Telemix.

  • Station (1,650 m): Take advantage of the lower area of the resort to get started in skiing in complete safety. Here you will find the different meeting points of the ski schools.

The best slopes in Les 2 Alpes

Les 2 Alpes is the ideal resort for intermediate skiers, with many blue runs to have fun on. A curiosity of Les 2 Alpes is that, contrary to what happens in many other ski resorts, the easiest slopes are mostly at the top and on the glacier, while the difficult, red and black slopes are concentrated at lower altitudes.

Among the most outstanding runs is the very long descent from the glacier to Mont de Lans, the lowest point of the resort. A route that covers almost 16 kilometres and a drop of 2,280 metres, offering an unparalleled experience for intermediate skiers.

The most adventurous skiers should not miss "La Fée 5", a black run that challenges even the most experienced skiers with its steep slopes. For those looking for a more relaxed experience, the "Vallée Blanche 1" piste is an excellent choice, especially in the mornings when it is bathed in sunlight. Our favourite slopes in Les 2 Alpes are the intermediate slopes "Bellecombes" and "Super Venosc", two fast and entertaining red runs.

The Best Après-Ski at Les 2 Alpes

There is no shortage of places to have a drink and listen to live music after a day of skiing. Whether you prefer to enjoy the sunset with a glass of French wine or dance on the tables with ski boots and a mug of beer in hand, Les 2 Alpes has plenty of great spots when the lifts close.

Among the most popular are The Pano Bar, at 2600 metres altitude, and the Umbrella Bar, located in the valley, are popular with dancing skiers, with live DJ's and good music.

Visitors to the ski resort of Les Deux Alpes value a good dining experience: they frequent the restaurants or go to the self-service restaurants and snack bars of some of the restaurants with waiters. We recommend a visit to Le Diable au Cœur, an authentic mountain restaurant. They serve high quality cuisine made with regional products with a menu of around 50 euros, quite an experience!

In addition, the resort regularly organizes festivals, concerts and other events, guaranteeing entertainment for all tastes. Our favourite event is undoubtedly the acclaimed Rise Festival, which has been held for years in Les Deux Alpes and kicks off the ski season.

How snow-sure is Les 2 Alpes?

Thanks to its more than 220 snowmaking cannons, Les Deux Alpes is very reliable in terms of snow. The valley's slopes are equipped with state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment and the high altitude and the glacier contribute to guaranteeing good snow.

With snow depths well above 250cm on average each year, fun in the snow is guaranteed. Did you know that you can even ski on the glacier in summer, so the resort is open for more than 200 days a year, or 9 months?

Les 2 Alpes, A family Ski Resort

The Ecole du Ski Français offers ski lessons here for children from the age of 1 at the Stade Enfants Louis Carrel and the Piou Piou children's area, and there are also free ski lifts in the valley. In addition, the resort has been awarded the "Famille Plus" label, which guarantees family-friendly services and facilities, such as playgrounds, entertainment programs and childcare.

What we didn't like about Les 2 Alpes

Access by car to the resort is not exactly the most comfortable, especially because of the car park facilities, which are conspicuous by their absence: there is no free car park in the entire resort. But don't worry, there are several paid public car park lots.

To get to Les Deux Alpes, you have to drive about an hour from Grenoble to the Oisans mountains. You travel on the same road that the stars of the Tour de France climb, a very steep, winding road, so don't forget your snow chains.

Our verdict and the best of Les 2 Alpes

Now that you know the facilities, slopes and features of the resort, here's the big question: why should you ski in Les 2 Alpes? Well, besides being one of the most popular ski destinations in the French Alps with relatively cheap prices, it is part of the Grand Galaxie Domain. What does this mean you wonder? When booking a 6-Days or more Ski Pass, you can ski not only in Les Deux Alpes, but also one day in Alpe d'Huez, La Grave, Serre-Chevalier and Sestriere and Montgenevre!

It is also one of the resorts that is part of our already popular Pow Weeks, with which you will enjoy ski deals on selected dates at great prices. Don't wait any longer and start planning your ski holiday in Les 2 Alpes with Esquiades.com!
