Sierra Nevada plans to extend its ski season through May

The ski and mountain resort of Sierra Nevada plans to extend until May 3 the winter season 2025/26, one week longer than planned, if the weather conditions allow to preserve the large amount of snow accumulated by the February storms in middle and high areas of the ski area.

With the extension of the winter hotel offer, Sierra Nevada will be able to offer skiing up to a month after Easter, which will leave it, if any is not able to get as far in the calendar, as the Granada resort as the only skiing offer in Southern Europe. The alpine center has important thicknesses that, in some points, exceed 4 metres.

The lower areas and south-facing slopes have less snow, although the snowmaking system will be able to strengthen these points if the conditions of cold and humidity are met. All in all, it is foreseeable that the exploitation of the skiable area will be concentrated in spring, at least in the areas of Borreguiles, Veleta and Laguna.

The Councilor of Development, Housing and Territorial Planning, and president of Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Rocío Díaz, considers that the extension of the season will allow, not only to enjoy the best spring snow in Europe,

"but it will give the possibility to businessmen and users of Sierra Nevada to recover the days of skiing lost in February by the chain of storms suffered by the station and all Andalusia".

Currently, the technicians of the ski resort, together with the multinational cable transport company Doppelmayr, are accelerating the recovery work on the Laguna chairlift, whose tower 23 collapsed due to the effects of the harsh snow, rain and wind of the first 20 days of February.

Although without the lifts of the area, from this Saturday it will be possible to ski partially in La Laguna (Trucha slope), with entrance through the Collado Alto and exit through the Collado Bajo. Cetursa Sierra Nevada, meanwhile, continues with the action plan so that, while a new bollard 23 is being built and installed, the area can be opened with the Dílar chairlift as a reference lift; in that scenario the Laguna chairlift, 'saving' the tower 23, would remain as a means of evacuation (with less capacity) in case of failure of the Dílar.

Simultaneously, Sierra Nevada will put on sale on Monday, March 9, the special spring ski pass, Snowspring. This is a limited offer of a two-day ski pass that will be on sale until April 6, when it can be used until the end of the season.

Spring in Sierra Nevada will be accompanied by an extensive program of activities to accompany the ski deal. The Sun and Snow electronic music festival, the Ultra Sierra Nevada, the music sessions in Borreguiles and the Spring Festival in Pradollano stand out in a spring calendar that is expected to be joined by new events and activities.
