A ski resort in Spain is currently the 4th snowiest ski resort in the world

Three metres of snow in Port Ainé by mid-January is a figure that had not been recorded so early in the season this century. In fact, over the past 16 years, similar snow depths had only been reached much later, towards the end of March 2025. These exceptional conditions place this ski resort in the Catalan Pyrenees among the snowiest ski resorts in the world, surpassed only by a select few resorts in the Alps and Japan.

Snow accumulation in Port Ainé has also occurred in record time. While maximum depths stood at around 145 cm at the end of last week, the arrival of the Harry storm on Saturday, followed by the eastern Mediterranean weather system on Monday and Tuesday, caused snow levels to double, reaching the current 305 centimetres.

According to Skiresort.info, which provides up-to-date snow reports for ski resorts worldwide, only three resorts currently exceed the snow depth recorded at this resort:

Glacier 3000 (Switzerland) – 381 cm
Daisetsuzan Kurodake (Japan) – 370 cm
Niseko Annupuri (Japan) – 340 cm
Port Ainé (Spain) – 305 cm
Mt. Baker (USA) – 277 cm

The downside of such heavy snow accumulation is that many slopes cannot yet be opened due to avalanche risk. Resort teams and piste services are working intensively to ensure the maximum possible number of skiable kilometres ahead of the weekend, when a high influx of skiers attracted by fresh powder is expected.

This situation also serves as a reminder of the very real danger of venturing off-piste under these conditions. Ski resorts urge visitors to remain within marked boundaries and to avoid closed areas. If a slope is closed, it is always for a reason.
