French Alps Virtual Tour. Second Stop: Tignes

And the second stop in our virtual tour through the French Alps is Tignes, which is approximately a 2-hour drive from Val Thorens.

#Ski Resort Info

Tignes is known for being one of the most snow-dependable winter ski destinations in France. This resort shares its ski area with Val d’Isère, offering a total of 300km of pistes for all abilities

Today we are going to focus on the Tignes ski area and the villages that surround it, which are set on a beautiful mountain plateau.

Tignes is made up of a number of small resorts at various altitudes - Tignes Les Boisses, Tignes Le Lac, Tignes Le Lavachet, Tignes Les Brevieres and Tignes Val Claret. Each village has its own local pistes and are connected to each other by the lift network and the public bus system.

The main resort on the edge of Le Lac sits at an altitude of 2100 metres above sea level and the lower villages still boast altitudes of 1550 and 1850 metres. Above all of this is the Grande Motte Glacier which rises to a lofty 3450 metres and is accessible not only during winter but in the summer too - yes you can come summer skiing in Tignes. This resort is always popular and a good place for beginners, families, groups and both piste fans and advanced skiers and snowboarders to enjoy.

#Things to do for non-skiers

If you’re not into skiing, this ski resort also offers other things to do.

There’s a bowling alley, you can also try ice diving on the resort’s lake, go down a 3km tobogganing slope, try out a unique ski-bungee jump, an indoor climbing wall and the giant Lagon aqua centre, with pools, water slides and wellness area.

#Après-ski in Tignes

Other ski resorts may be better known for their après-ski atmosphere but Tignes doesn’t fall short. Here’s a list of the most popular spots where you can have an ice cold beer after a day of skiing:

Dropzone

Located in Val Claret, Dropzone has the resort’s biggest south-facing terrace and some of the cheapest beer in town. There’s happy hour from 3pm to 6pm. The bar area serves snacks and has DJs, live bands, table football, pool, a big video screen and free Wi-Fi. At 10pm the place transforms into a nightclub.

Couloir bar

Another great spot in Val Claret, Couloir bar is the place to go for live music. It hosts a mix of bands and DJs, and a soul and funk night once a week. The bar has a large selection of whiskies and cocktails and serves tapas, plus there’s a restaurant upstairs.

Grizzly’s

A log cabin styled pub with a lovely warm and woody with an outdoor fire pit. Grizzly’s is one of the most attractive venues in Tignes Val Claret for a vin chaud or hot chocolate. But it is expensive, especially the cocktail menu.

Le Blue Girl

Open from midnight until 5am, Le Blue Girl in Val Claret is one of the resorts few late-night clubs. With a mainly EuroPop, Techno and R&B playlist don’t expect to see the first lift if you end the night dancing here.

Le Cocorico

At the bottom of the lifts at the main central hub in Val Claret, Le Cocorico opened its second dance-in-your-ski-boots bar in 2019/20, after the huge success of its Val d’Isere branch, which opened in 2014. The 400-square-metre open-air terrace hosts live bands and DJs, playing crowd-pleasing pop-rock, daily from 4pm to 8pm. The restaurant serves quick lunches and pizzas, plus coffee, and is open all day.
