In the French alpine resort of La Plagne, it is no longer possible to ski on the glacier located at an altitude of over 3,000 meters.

To protect it, the Savoie resort has decided not to rejuvenate the aging lifts in the area and has instead built a gondola lift that does not go as high.
"In the space of ten years, we have lost three quarters of the glacier," explains Luc Nicolino, safety director of the La Plagne slopes, speaking to the French private television channel BFM TV. He adds: "This means that it doesn't make much sense to put a ski lift here again, knowing that ski lifts are long-term investments".
Culminating at 3,250 meters, the Bellecôte glacier closed its doors to skiers at the end of last winter, but it was not until this season that the new Glaciers gondola lift, in its two sections, was opened for the first time.

In addition to restricting access to the glacier, La Plagne has taken other measures to preserve its ski area, including a new work technique. "We adapt our way of working to climatology and global warming," says Marcel Silvestre, in charge of the resort's slopes. "We can intelligently control the depth of the snow thanks to a device that is a GPS."
With these efforts, La Plagne hopes to maintain its large ski area and make it compatible with the environment.
