Gourette is studying the creation of new ski slopes in Vallon d'Anglas

The creation of ski slopes in the Vallon d'Anglas in Gourette is a project that first appeared in 2017, but has received a boost in recent months thanks to local entities such as 'Renouveau Val d'Ossau' or 'Les Amis de Gourette'.

This week during the presentation of the new features of Gourette for this coming ski season 2024-2025, Arnaud Libilbehety, Director of EPSA, the company that manages this winter resort and that of La Pierre de St. Martin, confirmed that this project is being studied, as long as it is to give it viability both in summer and winter.

However, he warns that the area could be prone to avalanches, so studies would have to be carried out beforehand. Should the project go ahead, it is estimated that the skiable area could be increased by 20% more, just by creating four new slopes in the Vallon d'Anglas.

This valley is currently one of the preferred off-piste areas for regular skiers at Gourette. It is accessed from the exit of the Anglas chairlift, and allows a continuous descent from about 1,000 meters that ends at the lake after which it is named. In summer, once the snow has melted, it would be open to hikers who can visit this freshwater nature reserve, those of Uzious and Lavedan, as well as the remains of the old mines in Gourette.

Project for the extension of trails to the Vallon d'Anglas

The extension of slopes by the Vallon d'Anglas was already raised in 2017 also as one of the works to connect Gourette and Artouste creating a skiable ski area of 100 kilometers of slopes. An initiative that was buried shortly after.

The boost to the Vallon d'Anglas project was revealed during the presentation this past Thursday, September 5, of the new features for the new ski season in Gourette, where the new Cotch gondola lift takes center stage. It replaces a six-people chairlift, which has been relocated on the Sarrière lift line, which has been dismantled . Two new covered belts have also been installed for beginner skiers and snowboarders.

The end of the works (with the intervention of about thirty companies) is scheduled for shortly before December 7, when the ski season is scheduled to start.

Between this summer's works and those of last year, 20 million euros have already been invested in Gourette 35 million approved in 2020.

Next year, the aim is to replace the Cinto ski lift and renovate the Snow K'Fé, the high-altitude restaurant located at altitude 1600 in the Cotch ski area. The goal is to make improvements and include a reception area for skiers and school groups.

In parallel to these works, many irons have been removed on the mountain. Thus, three belts, a gondola lift and three chairlifts have been dismantled. This has made it possible to remove 19 bollards, although, on the other hand, another 20 have been assembled for the new gondola lift. Old and unused equipment at the foot of the station has also been removed.

However, there is still a major unfinished business at GouretteThe rehabilitation of Le Valentin. The residential complex located directly on the slopes suffers from a serious structural problem that led to the closure of the car park lot and the shoring up of the building. The repairs have been stalled for several years, because the 800 owners refuse to pay for the total cost of the repairs, and have taken the case to court so that the Department of Pyrenees Atlantiques can provide subsidies.
