Valdelinares will double its volume of water for artificial snow

As part of the programme to strengthen and modernise snow production systems that Aramón is carrying out in all its ski resorts, the Aragonese Institute for Environmental Management (Inaga) has made a positive impact on the construction of a reservoir of 62,076 cubic metres of water in Valdelinares , as reported by the Periodico de Aragón.

INAGA, which with the resolution exempts this project from the usual environmental impact assessment procedure, recognises that the current volume of water stored in Valdelinares is not sufficient to guarantee a full ski season, an activity that stimulates the local economy.

Currently, the Valdelinares ski resort has three reservoirs with a capacity of 77,100 m3:

La Toma, with 5,000 m³;
La Tajera, with 25,000 m³; and
The Cave, with 47,100 m³.

With the 62,076 m² of La Mina, Valdelinares will store 80% more water, up to 139,176 m³ .

According to elperiodicodearagon.com , Valdelinares has been trying to modernise its facilities for two decades. Back then, Nieve de Teruel proposed expanding the skiable area by building two reservoirs: La Gitana (126,191 m³) and La Cueva (48,721 m³). Despite the fact that it was declared of General Interest and it was estimated that the skier capacity could be more than doubled, going from 7,220 to 17,420, the proposal was never fully implemented.

From an environmental perspective, the INAGA report assesses in a " compatible " way the impact that the construction of the new reservoir could have on the flora and landscape of the area.Although 204 specimens of Sideritis fernandez-casasii (an endemic plant classified as vulnerable in the Sierra de Gúdar) have been identified on the site, compensatory measures have been planned, including replanting it in a nearby area. In addition, the replanting of 50 pine trees is planned, which will help to minimise the impact on native vegetation.

As for other factors, the impact on the ground and the relief has been estimated at “ medium ” or “ moderate ” levels, while the impact on the atmosphere is considered potentially “ high ”. However, the technicians emphasize that the technical and environmental viability of the project will ultimately depend on the availability of the flow destined for snow production.

This ambitious plan is part of a broader investment strategy announced by the Government of Aragon, in collaboration with the owners of the ski resorts. 78 million euros have been allocated for the next four years: 64 million for the Pyrenees of Huesca and 14 million for those of Teruel.

According to the President of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, 48 million will come directly from regional funds, complemented by 16 million that the ski resorts themselves will invest between 2024 and 2027. This injection of capital not only seeks to optimize the production of artificial snow (applying cutting-edge technologies that allow for 30% energy savings and a reduction in water consumption), but also aims to strengthen the tourist offer and guarantee employment in a key ski area for the regional economy.
