Val Thorens incorporates the first autonomous bus in a ski resort

With capacity for 15 passengers, ' Berto ' will transport skiers, workers or anyone who needs it, throughout the winter complex for free , and also to be electric, with zero emissions . It is the first time in the world that such a vehicle has been incorporated in a ski resort. Val Thorens was testing this little bus last February and March, and after submitting it to the most thorough tests, has decided to keep it after the satisfactory answers.

The small driverless bus is equipped with a 12 state-of-the-art sensors, 4 video cameras, and GPS both to guide you through the streets and to get around the different 'traps' that arise spontaneously, such as the crosswalk (at that they will touch the horn to warn), the crossing of some special vehicle, as well as some obstacle in the street. In extreme cases, if the vehicle does not find a place to move because something prevents it, it stays three meters away and waits for an operator to solve it. Under normal circumstances, it can circulate at a maximum of 25km / h.

Those responsible for the French resort said it was a duty of Val Thorens to be the first to test and incorporate this type of vehicles in a high mountain environment with snow. And they were the first who in 1990 installed the first Funitel in the world and in 2007 installed a cable car without a driver in the cabins, fully automated.

In the future, the goal is to replace traditional buses with electric ones without a driver. At the moment Berto will make a route of nine stops. This winter, the first in its entirety, will have a technician inside in case you had to take the controls manually, in addition to maintaining a close relationship with the passengers, something essential according to the season.
