March is a month that usually does not fail. Even in the worst years of scarce snowfall as we have experienced this winter, it usually releases good snowfalls in our mountains. This time even with records that have exceeded expectations, and the most abundant in many seasons.
This is the case of Sierra Nevada, where in a statement acknowledged that these records were not seen for years. From Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC-Turisme), which manages six ski resorts in the Catalan Pyrenees, have also dealt with snowfalls not seen for many seasons, with up to 90 cm new.
Candanchú is the ski resort with more snow in the Pyrenees and Peninsula.
The snowfall episode began timidly at the end of February, and then reactivated with enthusiasm in the first week of March. After a pause of a couple of days, the storms returned again generously. On the negative side, both storms coincided with weekends, causing traffic jams on the access roads to the ski resorts due to cars trapped in the snow because of the lack of suitable equipment.
The snow was cleared quickly by the road clearing teams, except for those sections cut due to the risk of avalanches.
As proof that there is plenty of snow in our mountains, and even in those of our French and Andorran neighbors, here is a list of the resorts that can already measure a minimum of two meters in some ski area of their slopes.
We must remember that although the pole is still used to measure thicknesses, in recent years these measurements are much more accurate thanks to the implementation of Snowsat, a system built into the snow grooming machines that measures the exact thickness of the snow in each specific section of the slopes. This allows to know at certain times of the season, if it is preferable not to step on a part of the route due to lack of thickness, or even to bring snow to that exact area.
And in the same way, it is possible to know the exact thickness on the slopes. Although many times in snowdrifts can accumulate more than seven meters of snow, these are records that are discarded for the snow report, where only the data taken inside the track are reflected.
