Tavascan prepares for the next ski season with a new snowmaking system

The City Council of Lladorre has taken a decisive step to ensure the next ski season in the high mountain resort of Tavascan. Recall that the Pleta del Prat resort already asked for help in January 2023 to be able to invest in snow cannons to ensure the winter season and avoid losses when the snow does not fall.

After awarding the installation of several artificial snow cannons to the Italian company Demaclenko, the objective is clear: to combat the lack of snowfall that has affected the resort in recent years.

Tavascan is the only alpine ski resort under municipal management, where the budget for the resort comes from the annual budget of the Lladorre Town Council (Photo: Tavascan.net).

According to the newspaper Segre, the investment, which exceeds 675,000 euros, will allow snowmaking from the base of the station to its intermediate level, thus ensuring about 30,000 square meters of skiable area.

Until now, the Pallarsa resort had only two low-pressure mobile cannons, clearly insufficient to guarantee a minimum snow coverage.

The precarious situation not only affected the quality of the experience for skiers, but also the stability of the approximately 30 direct jobs generated by the resort during the winter season.

Last season, Tavascan could not open its slopes until January 12 due to the lack of snow. December was particularly dry, but snowfall at the beginning of the year made it possible to accumulate between 20 and 50 centimeters, which made it possible to open the resort temporarily.

However, it was in March, after abundant snowfalls, that the resort was able to secure the end of the season. Despite these efforts, the balance was negative with only 2,700 skiers and the Nordic ski slopes were the most affected.

The current project is not the only plan to improve the resort. In a second phase, it is planned to extend the snowmaking system to the upper elevation of the resort, at 2,182 meters. In addition, a new pumping room will be installed that will be integrated into the landscape to provide pressure to the system.

The public company Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), which already collaborates with Tavascan in commercial aspects and manages other resorts in Lleida such as Port Ainé, Boí Taüll and Espot, has assumed part of the technical studies of the project.

The Department of Territory has announced a grant of 500,000 euros to support these improvements.

The Town Council of Lladorre, for its part, plans to cover the difference with the income it receives from Endesa for its electrical installations.

Lladorre has also benefited from a €1.4 million grant from Next Generation funds, earmarked for its 365 Days High Mountain Sports Tourism project.
