Sierra de Béjar will invest 1 million euros for the next ski season.

The Sierra de Béjar debutante ribbon will have a hood.

According to what the Mayor of Béjar explained a few days ago, next January 17 they will present the project to invest up to 1 million euros in the ski resort, with funds provided by the Diputación de Salamanca within the Reindustrialization program.

The objective is to be able to extend the artificial snow system, which now only covers the beginners' area, and to put a hood on the beginners' ribbon. The construction of a High Performance Center at altitude has been ruled out, because for that to happen, overnight stays would have to be allowed and the current legislation in the area does not allow the installation of sleeping facilities up there.

The new City Council now has a whole legislature ahead to carry out the project, without municipal elections in between, which is what has apparently been delaying many actions in the ski resort of Sierra de Béjar, which even caused not to arrive in time for the review of the chairlift, before the Puente de la Inmaculada. The lack of snow finally caused no opening problems.

The municipal elections also prevented the approval of the repair of the chairlift. It has been five years since the attack that left it unusable. It was possible to start it up with some adjustments until the definitive parts arrived. And these arrived last year but it was decided to wait until the summer of 2023 to install them, but the municipal elections left the work permits in a drawer. Finally a month ago, precisely in the middle of the practically only snowfall that has fallen after the summer, the repair was made.

The revision of the chairlift was left for later, and according to the Mayor of Béjar it is still unfinished. It will be after Christmas when the load test will be done. Apparently the authorization to do it is for 2024.

If by the time all the revision tests are finished there is no snow, it will be opened for tourist use. For January 17, the artificial snow system will be put into operation, at least to be able to give lessons for the 'white baptisms', which is when many schoolchildren take their first steps in skiing.

However, the main objective of Sierra de Bejar-La Covatilla is still ahead, which is to become seasonally unseasonal so as not to have to depend so much on the winter snow to generate income or at least to be able to open the cafeteria. The City Council says it is already working on this issue. But for this it will also need an extension of the Reindustrialization funds.

In the meantime, we will have to hope that after the presentation of the project for the placement of cannons and the ribbon hood, the tender will be done quickly and the 2024-2025 ski season can be released.
