It took a long time to arrive, but finally the staff of the Serra da Estrela ski resort managed to access the facilities to be able to step on the slopes, clean the lift lines and get ready for the opening today, Wednesday, March 13. And it is that they start with 100% of the skiable ski area available. This is something that in the last 15 years has only been achieved in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Last weekend's snowfall left more than a meter of new snow, which the wind dragged in some points of the access road creating walls of up to five meters of snow. After the conscientious passage of the machinery, the road was cleared yesterday, and above all secured so that no avalanche is triggered by the passage of vehicles.
Today Serra da Estrela has opened everything. That is, its 4 lifts, the 19 slopes and 12 kilometers of ski slopes. The most experienced skiers will be able to release adrenaline on the 11 red slopes and the black one.
Serra da Estrela is the only ski resort in Portugal. It was opened to the public in 1971, when the Portuguese Air Force, which managed rudimentary ski lifts in the area, handed it over to a private company. In 1992 the chairlift was installed and ski lifts for beginners were installed, followed shortly afterwards by an artificial snow system. Since then it has not received major investments, although about 10 years ago there was speculation about the possibility of increasing it to 50 kilometers with three gondola lifts.
Serra da Estrela presents a fully winterized image in mid-March.
An overly megalomaniacal project that was finally discarded. However, it does seem that it will receive an investment to install a gondola lift and remodel the accommodation facilities.
That the Serra da Estrela ski resort presents its best image in the month of March is quite common. In fact, more than once it has even extended its season well into the spring. A couple of years ago it was possible to ski there in May.
