Monachil asks Sierra Nevada ski resort to use sewage for its artificial snow

The City Council of Monachil (Granada) has proposed to Cetursa, the public company that manages the ski resort, located in its municipal area, to use the purified waste water from the winter compound to manufacture artificial snow.

This would make it "the first ski resort in Spain to implement this novel system," as reported by the Monachil City Council in a note, after the mayor, José Morales, and the Councilor for the Environment, Francisco Álvarez, they have transferred the general director of Cetursa, Jesús Ibáñez, in the course of a meeting in which the project to remodel the Sierra Nevada treatment plant that the Board plans to undertake shortly has been discussed.

"From the Monachileño City Council we believe that this remodeling of the treatment plant, which will involve a million-dollar investment in this infrastructure so important for Sierra Nevada, should serve to bring the ski resort closer to the National Park, reusing waters that have already been extracted from its natural cycle, and that they would necessarily be returned more purified for use in wintering "

Thus, the system that the Metropolitan Council is proposing to Cetursa consists of implementing a tertiary treatment of water, instead of the secondary one that exists right now and

"that the Board wants to continue, a measure that would allow the purified waters of the ski resort to be used to irrigate, for example, or to manufacture artificial snow with the Cetursa cannons"

Currently, this tertiary treatment of wastewater in Spain is only used for golf courses, but there is no ski resort that does it, as it does in other countries such as Poland or Austria. The councilor has indicated that

"We believe that the remodeling of the Sierra Nevada treatment plant, whose project will be put out to tender shortly, should be used to implement this system and be more environmentally friendly."
