French Pyrenees closes its ski season: only two resorts will remain

This Sunday, more than twenty ski resorts in the French Pyrenees closed for the season.French Pyrenees. It is the most important wave of closures, which will end with the farewell of Grand Tourmalet and Les Angles next Sunday. Then only two will remain until April 21.

Ski resorts in the French Pyrenees usually close in three 'waves'. The first of these comes as soon as the school holidays are over. There are winter resorts that are specifically oriented to this market, and open and close only to take advantage of those days. This is the case of resorts such as Bourg d'Oueil, Hautacam, Camurac, Goulier and even recently others such as Artouste or Guzet, which close as soon as the first week of March is over, until next season.

These are generally small resorts, oriented towards the school holidays, which open for Christmas, often close for three weeks in January, and then start up again from February to the first days of March. A 'surgical' calendar that seeks to open only when the influx is guaranteed.

When do ski resorts close?

The second wave of closures is the one that began last Sunday, March 23 with half a dozen resorts, continued yesterday 30 with just over a dozen, and will end next April 6 with Grand Tourmalet and Les Angles.

These are the largest resorts in the French Pyrenees. As there are no Easter holidays there (only on Monday, April 21), the season is already closed. In any case, practically all of them are very satisfied with the winter hotel offer, as they will present many records of sold ski passes.

Cauterets and Piau-Engaly are in charge of the third wave this year. They are the only two ski resorts that traditionally stay until Easter. Sometimes, depending on the snow, they have even extended a little longer.

Piau-Engaly ski deals

They are winter resorts that meet two requirements. The first and most important: they tend to accumulate more snow as they are at a higher altitude. The second is that there a very high percentage of their ski passes are bought by Spanish skiers.

At the moment the situation is good for both ski resorts. Exactly two weeks before Easter in both ski resorts a minimum of one and a half metres has been accumulated in the highest peaks after the last snowfalls, which are from this Saturday. In Piau Engaly it is not even discarded that some flakes fall in the middle of the week.
