Baqueira starts the countdown to its skiing extension to Pallars

Almost 20 years after putting the project on the table, the ski resort of Baqueira Beret will begin its expansion towards Pallars. A goal already set in 2003 when the Bonaigua ski area was inaugurated with the installation of three new chairlifts: the TSD4 La Peulla, the TF Cap de Port, as well as the TSD4 Bonaigua, which replaced a two-people chairlift.

This meant a first step to extend its skiing ski area towards Pallars. A project presented two months before the opening of those three lifts, talked about creating up to 27 skiable kilometres distributed in 17 slopes. Unfortunately, several allegations derailed the project in the courts, until in September last year the TSJC finally gave the go-ahead to the new lifts in Baqueira.

With the endorsement in hand, the ski resort managers preferred to finish the reforms being undertaken in recent years in the Beret area, where two new chairlifts have been installed, the circulation on the slopes has been improved, the ski runs have been renovated and the ski lifts have been renovated.The new Baciver ski area, which has become one of the most appreciated by Baqueira regulars, has also been created.

According to the newspaper El Español, the managers explained in their presentation of the season in Madrid that the time has come for the expansion towards Pallars Sobirá. The first step will be to approve the new investment at the next Shareholders' Meeting. If the season closes without problems, we will start to see the works of a new chairlift and some of its slopes in this Catalan region next summer.

The approximate investment in this first phase was, in 2017, about 9 million euros. A figure that is going to be much higher seven years later. When it is finished we will be able to ski on 12 new ski slopes, of which 2 are green, 4 blue, 5 red and 1 black, occupying a total of 323 hectares and just over 10 kilometres of skiable length so Baqueira will reach (when it is done) a little more than 180 kilometres of layouts, if others have not been added before by other ski areas.

It will be the first step for a project that should end up with a ski resort totally autonomous but totally linked to Baqueira Beret. In other words, skiers and snowboarders coming from Pallars Sobirà will find all the services they have in the Val d'Aran: restaurants, rentals, ski lockers, beginners' area, schools, etc...

The expansion will be accompanied by systems to ensure snow on the slopes with the latest generation equipment that consume much less water and electricity, something vital for the resorts in a context of environmental sustainability and increased energy bills.

The renovation of the TSD6 dera Mina, as well as the dismantling of the two chairlifts in that area, which will free the Argulls slopes of wires and cables, leaving a wide space for skiing, will be put on hold for the time being. Another objective of the renovation of this lift is the fast connection between the Baqueira and Bonaigua ski areas, something that will become more necessary with the extension towards Pallars.
