Aragon Pyrenees does not rule out extending the ski season

The recent snowfalls that have fallen in the Aragon Pyrenees, however abundant they may be, are not going to save a season that is not expected to be one of the best in recent years. But it is always exciting to see the white mountains even if it is late.

Candanchú does not rule out the possibility of opening its ski season one more day.

Easter is expected to be one of the best in recent seasons, but it will only serve to make up the data of both the ski resorts and the satellite economy that revolves around the operation of the ski lifts.

That is why some businesses and small hotels are wondering if the season could be extended a little longer, as long as the conditions are right. It would not be the first time this has been done. Both Candanchú and Astún, as well as Formigal, have opened a week longer than the calendar, if there was a lot of snow and affluence.

Even so, being able to open depends on other factors, mainly on the number of staff available. Both ski resorts and hotels, as well as the large equipment rental stores, extend the contracts of workers depending on the calendar of the winter resorts. Aramon announced March 31 as the last day to turn the ski lifts, so everyone in general is contracted until that date or one more day to finish picking up.

So if they open for another week, it should be with the few staff available, essentially permanent staff, which makes the number of slopes and facilities is greatly reduced. There are no longer so many waiters, nor mountain staff or to serve customers who want to rent.

Panticosa and Formigal are expecting a great Easter week of skiing and snow.

That is why from Aramón, regarding a possible extension of the hotel offer, explained yesterday to El Periódico de Aragón that

"It is early to think about that. Right now the closure is fixed and if there are new developments we will communicate them. Any scenario is possible for us".

Who is somewhat more open to extending the ski season is Alvaro Luna, Director of Candanchú, although in the same newspaper he warns that this will depend on several factors, either the available staff, temperatures, etc....

"Extending the season is a possibility that is on the table. It is not something that is far from being ruled out. Precipitation has ensured that there will be snow until the end of the season at high altitudes, and at low altitudes it will depend on temperatures, but it gives us very good prospects and, above all, it gives us the peace of mind to be able to organize and manage ourselves in the best way for what is to come.

But if the season is to be extended, we will try to announce it as soon as possible so that the market has the capacity to respond".

And the fact is that ski resorts not only need personnel to be able to open their facilities, but also that there is a minimum of services in operation in the economic 'ecosystem' that revolves around the winter resorts.

At the end of this week, the Candanchú base will renew its snow again.
