From November 1 to March 31, it is mandatory to equip your vehicle with contact wheels or chains when it snows.
The regulations affect 48 departments of France and the Principality of Andorra -in this case until May 15-, but until now a blind eye has been turned.
It will be from January 1, 2023 when the French gendarmerie will begin to fine all those drivers who do not have chains in the car or contact tires when driving through the French mountain departments included in the regulations with 135 euros .
And if you don't pay, they will immobilize the vehicle.
In Catalonia, for the moment, it is a recommendation, but in France, --as in Andorra--, it has been an obligation for years, between November and the end of March.
For this reason, before the fines of the new legislation are applied, both the Mossos d'Esquadra and the gendarmes have launched an information campaign for drivers at the border crossings between Catalonia and France.
"We are very interested that people climb the Pyrenees properly equipped, both with chains or contact wheels, especially when there is a forecast of snowfall or adverse weather conditions," Xavier Millán, head of the Mossos de la Cerdanya police station, explained to TV3.
The so-called mountain law of France, which affects 48 departments , came into force in November last year.. The authorities have left a year of neck for drivers to prepare, before applying the fines to those who violate the rule.
To indicate the areas affected by the Mountain Law, two new signs appear in the Helloghway Code. Signal B58 indicates entering a zone and signal B59 indicates exiting the zone. You will find them on French roads this winter.
The departments affected by the mountain law:
Ain (01), Allier (03), Alpes de Haute Provence (04), Hautes-Alpes (05), Alpes-Maritimes (06), Ardèche (07), Ariège (09), Aude (11), Aveyron (12), Cantal (15), Corrèze (19), Corse-du-Sud (2A), Haute-Corse (2B), Côte-d'Or (21), Creuse (23), Doubs (25), Drôme (26), Gard (30), Haute-Garonne (31), Hérault (34), Isère (38), Jura (39), Loire (42), Haute-Loire (43), Lot (46), Lozère (48), Meurthe -et-Moselle (54), Moselle (57), Nièvre (58), Puy-de-Dôme (63), Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64), Hautes-Pyrénées (65), Pyrénées-Orientales (66), Bas-Rhin (67) , Upper Rhine (68), Rhône (69), Upper Saone (70), Saone-et-Loire (71), Savoy (73), Haute-Savoie (74), Tarn (81), Tarn-et-Garonne (82), Var ( 83), Vaucluse (84), Haute-Vienne (87), Vosges (88), Yonne (89), Territoire de Belfort (90).
Finally, instead of starting to fine from November 1, when the winter season begins, during which it is mandatory to wear chains or spiked wheels, the date has been postponed to January 1.
On Monday, the Mossos d'Esquadra activated an information point on the road that goes to Llívia , next to the border. They stopped all the vehicles going to France and informed them of this legislative change. And only a few meters further, but already in the French part, the gendarmes did the same.
Thomas Le Gouic, commander of the Prades gendarmerie, is clear: “if someone does not have adequate chains or wheels, they will be penalized. And if the person does not pay the fine at the moment, we are going to immobilize the vehicle until the person goes to look for some chains and pays the penalty," he said before the cameras of Catalan television.
