If you still do not know this year, the summer in the Pyrenees has been one of the wettest in a long time, not excessively but above average. A bit strange since in the center and north of Europe high temperatures have been recorded and the summer has been very hot and dry. Also, there are many ski resorts that look greener than ever.

But does it matter? Of course! There are less than 100 days to open the new ski season 2018-2019 and we want to know the consequences of these rains in the Pyrenees. Well, there they go:

Rain = beautiful lakes and renewed aquifers

Thanks to the rains this summer the lakes have filled with water and look beautiful, and also, the aquifers of the mountains have been recharged. A very positive point since all this water will help feed the snow cannons; On the other hand, this water is much cleaner and transparent, so they will get snow of a superior quality.

The perpinyà ensures that the rains have more positive than negative factors, but if it ends up being excessive, it can damage the state of slopes of some points especially if they are very intense and of short duration. The ski resort of La Molina explains that the abundant rainfall this year means that the water does not rise in temperature and arrives cool in autumn, a very important fact since it improves snow production.

Rain = lots of grass on slopes

Another benefit of these rains is the fact of keeping the soil moist and helping the grass grow faster, denser and stronger. This will form a nice "carpet" of grass that in winter will help to ski with much less thickness of snow.

The inconvenient? An excess of this grass carpet will force the resorts to have many more maintenance tasks. To solve this small problem, the resorts should cut the grass or let the flocks graze on the slopes to prevent them from growing in abundance; since for the production of snow a mantle of grass is needed as short as possible.

Rain = higher and more abundant forests

Like the grass, the black pine forests on the sides of the slopes will grow in height and with much more force, although only a few centimeters more than last season this will help protect the snow from the rays for a few more minutes. Sun. That is, skiers will surf much better :)

Rain = more humidity and colder

As you already know, moisture retains much better cold, this consequence is a clear advantage for autumn. Since the soil will be much cooler and more humid and will help keep a cold soil and all this will be beneficial for the first snows.
