More than 20 years ago, in January 2001, the ski resorts of Pal and Arinsal were linked by a feat of engineering at the time: the cable car from Coll de la Botella to Pic Negre, with a total route of something more. 2 kilometers long.
This way, two ski resorts, which on their own were small and unattractive to the international market, became a large ski area, with 65 km of slopes. Since then, both brands have worked as a single ski resort, Vallnord Pal-Arinsal, although it is true that a skiable union that allows greater fluidity between the slopes on both sides has always been lacking, so that skiers do not have to take off their equipment to go from one ski resort to another.
This is an ambitious project, since the ski resorts are separated by a steep valley with a significant drop in level, making it difficult to connect by track. However, what initially seemed to be a disadvantage is now seen as a more favorable situation, as they are black and red slopes that will not require much earthwork.
The decision to go ahead with the project was approved before the pandemic and will have a budget of about 30 million euros, an investment that even exceeds the cost of the Soldeu ski platform, which amounted to a cost of about 24 million euros.
Starting next year, it will be possible to ski from Arinsal to Pal.
The Director of Grandvalira Resorts, Juan Ramón Moreno, use the presentation of novelties in Grandvalira Resorts for the upcoming ski season, to confirm that next year the works will begin for this connection by track between the resorts of Pal and Arinsal. Moreno affirms that "It is very important to be able to solve this problem before the start of the 2023-2024 season, because that way the skiers will be much more connected and it will be good news for everyone"
For his part, the deputy director of SETAP365, Josep Marticella, added that the first meetings with representatives of the Parish of La Massana took place last week, with the project's plans already in a final stage. This way, it is already foreseen, that the construction will be carried out in several phases, but that the two ski areas of Vallnord Pal-Arinsal will be connected by ski slopes for experts and that a ski lift will allow skiers to go up to continue skiing.
Marticella affirms that "the technical work is already in progress. The connection project has four parts: the necessary lifts; the slopes that we will have to create; the artificial snow system has to be assembled; and avalanche prevention measures have to be taken. But, as stated in the project, the union will be on red and black slopes, which, on the other hand, would not entail a great amendment of the terrain."
