The mythical Barcelona slope has been part of the history of La Molina since 1954 with the arrival of the Gondola lift Puig d'Alp in the years of expansion of the resort towards the Tosa mountain.
The track has been in service for fifty years as a way back from the Niu de l'Àliga Refuge (2,537 m) to the centre of the resort (1,660 m) via the Volta Muntanya Sagrada track.
Apart from commercial use, this track was also used as a competition track in its early days.
Currently, it is an accessible track with the Cadí-Moixeró cable car that reaches the top of the Tosa de Alp.
Today, sixty-eight years after its inauguration, La Molina has presented the renewed layout as a black track 4.75 kilometers long, with a vertical drop of 859 meters and a maximum gradient of 66%.
The work on the track has been divided into three large areas. The upper one, between 2,490 m and 1,985 m, which is land with very little vegetation and where only a few large stones have been removed.
The intermediate zone, from 1,975 to 1,755 m, where the soil has been outlined and some trees removed. Earthworks have also been carried out, guaranteeing a 70 m wide track and the waters have been channeled.
Lastly, the lower section and the finish line were already conditioned in 2010.
The conditioning of the slope has improved the attractiveness of Barcelona both for leisure skiing and for competition.
In this last section, the route is in the process of being approved by the International Ski Federation (FIS) and in a very short time it will be the benchmark for speed in the Pyrenees.
Sports vocation of La Molina
La Molina since its origins and especially for two decades has promoted competitive skiing and snowboarding at all social and sporting levels.
Within this path to provide the resort with stadiums, one of speed was missing that had the possibility of being approved by the FIS. With this recognition, La Molina will be able to organize speed events (downhill) up to the highest level of World Cups and even Olympic events.
The best option for the speed track has always been the Barcelona track. It has the optimal conditions of unevenness and slopes, it presents a layout that makes it technically very attractive. In addition, it has the addition that it was already an existing track and, therefore, conditioning it did not have a great environmental impact.
Although, as has been said, the track is 4.75 kilometers long with a drop of 859 meters and a maximum slope of 66%, the measures with which the FIS works for its homologation are:
Length: 3,080m
Exit height: 2,490 m
Arrival height: 1,740 m
Slope: 750m
Width: 70m
Variable slope: Between 61% and 7%
