Ordino Arcalís resort has enhanced this season more sustainability actions , related to its environmental policy and waste reduction. Although last year the objective was the elimination of single-dose containers and plastic cups of beers (replaced by glasses made of corn material) as main actions, this year the milestone is focused on suppressing 100,000 bottles of water from a I only use . To make this possible, the resort offers limited edition refillable metal bottles for sale in collaboration with Clean Wave , an organization that strives for the elimination of single-use plastic bottles, based in the Balearic Islands. Linked to this, the filling of reusable bottles with treated water from the mountains of Arcalís is promoted through machines that purify it with a special treatment, carried out by the specialized company KMZero .

The ski resort launched different actions last year for the preservation of the environment. Specifically, the pods of ketchup, mayonnaise, oil and vinegar and other condiments were removed, as well as straws and individual containers of sugar and honey . The start-up of the filtered water machines already last year meant the elimination of 50,000 single-use plastic bottles, and this year the objective is to eliminate up to 100,000 units .

The actions that are promoted from the resort are, on the one hand, the use of a machine that purifies water to adapt it to drinking standards; and on the other, the promotion and sale of a refillable bottle to favor the reduction of single-use ones .

In this way, the machines, which can be found in the four restaurants of the resort, use a process of collecting water directly from the mountains of Arcalís through treatments ranging from filtration to reverse osmosis . Thus you get an excellent quality water , pure and free of odors and other substances that affect your taste . Subsequently it is remineralized with magnesium and potassium. In addition, and the service at the restaurant table is made with reusable glass bottles that respect the content and do not generate waste. Among the benefits derived from this action, we must highlight the savings in transport (both full and empty for recycling), in extra costs and intermediaries, in addition to saving space and storage. These water dispensers are also in the staff rooms, and have the characteristic that they can serve natural, cold, or soda water.

At the same time, the resort has put on sale refillable metal bottles , light and with a minimalist design, very resistant and practical. This action is done jointly with Cleanwave.org, a dynamic movement of like-minded people, who recognize the urgent need to offer a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bottles.

Customers who wish to fill their bottles can do so at the KmZero machines of the resort at the price of one euro , either with the bottle of Arcalís - Clean Wave or with their own. A way to contribute to the environment, promoting customers to save money, and using the natural resources of the resort.

Apart from the actions carried out by the same resort, it is important to highlight the existence of the Arcalís mini-hydroelectric power plant , which has been in operation since 2017. It is a pioneer and unique system, which has been carried out minimizing the environmental impact. The raft that is used to capture the water from the canyons (200,000 cubic meters), and that comes from the Tristaina lakes, is channeled below the tracks (1,400 m long and 200 m uneven). Its force spins a turbine and a 455 kW alternator, and the energy produced is transferred to the Nord Andorrà network. Located in the Pont del Castellar, the minicentral can produce up to 2 million kw / h per year, the equivalent of what Arcalís consumes annually, which means that the resort could be supplied entirely with renewable energy .
