David Ros, Director of Boí Taüll: “ We want to improve the experience of that skier who prefers mountain skiing or who combines modalities. The one that looks for natural spaces, spaces not invaded by ski lifts, alpine skiers, or snowboarders ... Our objective is to separate the disciplines in a 'natural' way ”.
“The luck we have in Boí Taüll is that we have a free area, which triples the surface of what is now skiable in alpine and snowboarding. That's where you can go mountain skiing. "
We are talking about large dimensions of skiable area
The Boí Taüll ski area, which is owned by Actius de Muntanya, a public company that will now be transferred to the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, has a total area of 1900Ha. Currently, of these, only 560Ha are used. That is, about a third of it.
“For now, in this“ extra ”area we have only marked freeride routes and the marking consists only of signage and recommendations aimed at the public in terms of information and safety. But the proliferation of mountain skiing leads us to the need for management . Some go up, others go down ... Depending on what time they do it, they can even find the machines that work ... Yes, you have to order it ”.
Study in progress
David Ros: “ We have started a study in which we analyze, among others, which are the most popular areas and how many people we could have. The idea, in addition to ordering, is to give it visibility so that the skier who wants to learn the technique of mountain skiing and that expert who wants to enjoy know that Vall de Boí will be a privileged reference point for practicing mountain skiing ”.
David Ros adds: “Still to finish specifying how, we will do what FGC has already done in other resorts, which is to have tracks designed for this type of ski and the use of a ski pass for mountaineering with which you can do a fixed number of uploads per day ”. Ros explains.
The aspiration of an international test and its work in progress
“And, although at the moment it is only an aspiration that is being worked on ”, David Ros advances: “we would like to host some international test . We are working on it ”. In this case, the world could also know Boí Taüll as a place of reference for this increasingly practiced discipline , mountain skiing.
Additional services?
"It is likely that we will incorporate the material rental service for those who want to get started," says David Ros.
Collaborations?
David Ros: “ We want to collaborate with guides. In no case create a guide training school, but collaborate with them. We will not get into training because it is a regulated topic and it is not our responsibility. On the other hand, we can help make experiences such as that proposed by the private guide association, which already exists, even more satisfactory. Many of the guides he has attached are from the Parc Nacional d'Aigüestortes. The activity they propose is to do routes with their customers. That is where it is important to work together because they can use the lifter and it will facilitate access. Or even, since there is often a risk of avalanches, having the support of the technical and professional team of Boí Taüll to prevent the risk of this type of situation. But, what has been said, is a matter of planning and we are still finishing the study and the concrete formulas of implementation.
We are open. If the guides ask us to offer training from the resort, courses ... Well, we will provide them with spaces , rooms to give training and we can provide personnel for the topic of avalanche prevention, but the leadership must always be led by a qualified third party. No Boí Taüll. For that there is already the Pobla training center or the Higher Degree Center of Pont de Suert. In other words, in training, working hand in hand yes. Lead, in no case ”.
