On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its opening to the public, the company in charge of the management of the Pic du Midi, which previously focused on scientific research and now also on tourism, plans to expand its activities on the mountain and its accommodation offer. To this end, l'Hôtellerie des Laquets will be inaugurated in 2025, according to the project presented in 2021.
The aim is torestore the former hotel built in the 1930s, which was connected to the Pic du Midi by cable car in 1962. However, the cable car had to be dismantled in the 1980s due to technical deficiencies, with only 20 years of useful life.
Although the astronomical observation and scientific research center on the Pic du Midi was inaugurated in 1882, for 70 years the staff had to make a difficult ascent to the summit, which in winter required cross-country skis and only a few could do it. This caused researchers to lose interest in getting up there, until it was finally decided to install the cable car, which was inaugurated in 1952.
Previously, the Pic du Midi was used for astronomy, meteorology, television and aerial navigation. However, in 1994, the French government closed it, as new technologies made it possible to carry out the same research without having to climb so high. Despite this, the Midi-Pyrénées region took over the facilities and renovated them to turn them into a tourist attraction. In 2000, the facilities were reopened after a complete renovation, and public success led to the opening of the 27-room hotel at the summit in 2011.
With a record turnover of €7.6 million in 2022, and a profit of €740,000 with more than 140,000 visitors, the hotel is already booked for 2024, with prices of almost €500 per night and an average occupancy of 96% all year round. Due to the great success, the idea of expanding the facilities with the reconstruction of the old Hôtellerie des Laquets hotel has been mooted.
The project, presented to the Sers town council, has a cost of 8.5 million euros, of which approximately half is subsidized by the State, the Midi-Pyrénées Region and European Funds. The architectural firm "Cabinet 360" of Toulouse has been selected to carry out the project, with the aim of respecting the architecture and the spirit of the site. The establishment, which will be able to accommodate 36 people per night, will have 17 rooms, all with terraces and thermal baths.
In addition, an automatic roundholiday cable car will be built to connect the Hôtellerie des Laquets hotel with the Pic du Midi, with an 18people cabin that will cross a difference in altitude of 222 meters. Construction of the cable car will cost 3.1 million euros and is expected to be inaugurated in 2025.
