"I still remember the day of the inauguration, we were impressed when we got on" was one of the most widely read comments on networks these days. And it is that this Sunday, Sierra Nevada announced on its social networks the last holiday of the Al Andalus cable car (February 10, 1990 - April 9, 2023), the oldest and one of the most emblematic ski lifts of the Andalusian station after 33 years of service .
After its last holiday from Pradollano to Borreguiles , dismantling will begin on Monday to make way for a new state-of-the-art gondola that will reduce energy costs, with an investment of 17 million euros.
The Junta de Andalucía will finance the replacement of the Al Andalus cable car with Next Generation funds from the European Union. The project includes the expansion of cabins to ten people , with space for skis and boards inside and a side access, similar to the subway, to avoid crowds.
The low influx of visitors in spring, the high temperatures and the complexity of the installation have led Sierra Nevada to close this emblematic ski lift early , allowing more time for the installation of the new system before the start of the next season. The updating of the station's mechanical means began this year with the Alhambra and Émile Allais chairlifts. The season's epitaph for Al Andalus says it all: "Thanks for everything, old friend. Your replacement will be up to the task."
