The ski resort of Val d'Isère is one of the queens of the Alps and therefore of the world. It is a resort that occupies a clear place in the Top Ten worldwide. In addition, Val d'Isère forms together with Tignes-Val d'Isère, one of the largest and most extensive ski resorts in the world.
Snow conditions in Val d'Isère are normally excellent in both quality and quantity. The slopes are invariably north-facing and fifty-four percent of them are between 2200 and 2900 meters.
The slopes of Val d'Isère are divided into three main interconnected mountains. The very famous Bellevarde mountain hosts the Olympic slopes and some of the most famous competition slopes. Access is by funicular from the Daille or by cable car from the village of Val d'Isère.
La Solaise is accessed from the village, with complicated return descents and a series of beautiful, more gentle slopes at altitude that connect via the Col de l'Iseran to the Pisaillas massif. The other access to Pisaillas is from the small village of Le Fornet, a couple of kilometers from Val d'Isère. It is generally the easiest area, with gentler slopes as you climb up to the glacier with excellent snow conditions.
The resort stretches along a valley and has several cores. Coming from Bourg St. Maurice is La Daille. It is a modern construction completely directly on the slopes. A little further on is the village of Val d'Isère. It has a charming old part and the new buildings in the center are very nice, forming a very harmonious set of pedestrian streets with stores and a pleasant atmosphere. At the end of the valley is the center of Le Fornet, very rustic and directly on the slopes.
