Sierra Nevada confirms new cable cars and chair lifts for the 2023 ski season

The Minister of Development and Infrastructure of the Junta de Andalucía, confirmed yesterday at the Sierra Nevada ski resort, that the award of the new Al-Andalus gondola lift, as well as the Veleta chairlift , have already been put out to tender.

The candidate for the Andalusian Parliament, Marifrán Carazo, within the framework of a meeting with representatives of the business ski area in Pradollano, in Monachil, in the metropolitan area, highlighted " the greatest performance in Sierra Nevada since the 90s " of the last century.

The current Regional Minister for Development, Infrastructure and Territorial Planning of the Junta de Andalucía has reviewed the modernization of the facilities of the Sierra Nevada winter resort carried out by Centros Turísticos SA. (Cetursa) in the last three and a half years, which represents " a very important change for the customer and the company ".

According to a press release sent at the end of the act, the modernization "has been carried out by the Government of the change of Juanma Moreno in the Junta de Andalucía, with the investment of 51.7 million euros since 2019".

Marifrán Carazo has detailed the actions carried out in the last three and a half years, designed to improve user service, the lifts and speed up access to them to avoid crowds and queues. "We are going to continue investing in this ski resort so that Sierra Nevada continues to improve the service it provides and to be that reference resort for Andalusia and Europe as a whole".

"This investment has been made at the most difficult time, when Juanma Moreno turned more to the ski resort," Carazo stressed, when, due to the pandemic, Sierra Nevada had to close its doors in 2020 , living the second shortest ski season in the history of Sierra Nevada, with 112 days of activity, only surpassed by 1994/95, the one of the postponement of the Alpine Ski World Championships, with 108 days of activity".

"This investment effort has led to the digitization of access to the slopes, with the installation of new ticket vending machines, with new turnstiles and HD cameras; reforms in the car park, with new barriers and integration with Ski Passes and new sales machines; in addition to the implementation of new software and equipment for lockers".

"In search of improving the visitor experience, the complete remodeling of the User Service Center in the Plaza de Andalucía, of the ticket offices has been carried out; the installation of 12 information screens in the main ski lifts of the resort Sierra Nevada ski area; the remodeling of the car park control centre; the construction of new toilets in Borreguiles; and comprehensive reform of shops and ski equipment rentals".

In line with this, Carazo has added the total reform of the restoration of the Borreguiles building and the opening of a new restoration centre in the Loma de Dílar area.

This investment in three and a half years of almost 52 million euros has also been aimed at improving the skiable areas, with the renovation of 310 latest-generation cannons , which have made it possible to "reinforce snow production in the fundamental axes of the ski area and with which we also improve contact with our environment".

These guns are high-capacity, marginal-production , low-power guns with up to 75 percent less power consumption . It is an artificial snow that will provide more days of practicing the sport of skiing with better quality snow .

For better snow conservation, the Sierra Nevada ski resort has been equipped with seven new piste machines , four of them hybrid, the first of its kind in Spain, all equipped with a snowsat system to determine the depth of snow under machine. This kit is complemented by the addition of four new snowmobiles ."

"For the coming season, two new lifts will be launched at the start of the 22-23 season, which is the first renewal of lifts since 2009. The inauguration of the new chairlifts, the Emile Allais and the Veleta II , shows our commitment to continue investing in this resort and continue improving its skiable surface with this project that will involve the comprehensive reorganization of the Borreguiles beginners' area , the epicentre of the ski area, that is going to undergo a transformation in terms of its slopes and the use of the skiable surface".

In addition, the installation of two more ski lifts has already been awarded for execution next summer: a chairlift and a gondola lift .

"We are going to continue betting in Sierra Nevada on these top-level sports practices with a great sporting event, the Snowboard Cross World Cup in March 2023 , which will take place in the ski resort, attracting a large number of visitors. and sports practices.

That historical investment of 52 million euros, a bet that had not been made for 20 years, facing improvements that were necessary to favor the ski resort. "Our commitment to continue in this line, for this reason in the electoral program we have a battery of proposals to improve the ski resort and continue to maintain Sierra Nevada in the position of being one of the best ski resorts in the world".

Likewise, he recalled that road safety actions have been carried out on the access road to Pradollano for a total amount of almost one million euros and has reiterated the commitment to tender and award the works to improve access to Sierra Nevada, with a budget of 3.6 million.
